Custom design and fabrication of cleaning facility enables railcar maintenance company to service more products in a safe and efficient manner

In the wake of increased demand for refurbished or repaired rolling stock rail cars, the largest rolling stock maintenance provider, based in Channelview, Texas, prepared to build a new railcar cleaning facility to meet their customer’s needs.

This large-scale project involved the relocation of utilities, clearing of land, construction on a new building, process piping, and safe access equipment for its workforce.

While the provider could have relied on its own internal resources to design and fabricate the solution, it chose instead to work with Carbis, the world leader in fall prevention solutions that specializes in customized bulk loading access equipment and turnkey systems for truck, rail, and marine applications.

Carbis, a past partner with the provider, was chosen for its experience, ability to integrate existing design into a custom solution, competitive price and lead times, and open and productive communication practices with the client.

Carbis custom-designed a dual-sided platform system with safe access locations for each rail rolling stock spotting on the rail spur in the new cleaning facility. The system consisted of safe access gangways at each working location. Carbis also recommended the installation of safety cages for all operators and technicians, as well as an overhead monorail system for fall protection when working on the rolling stock.

As a result of the purchase, the rolling stock company was provided with an engineered solution that was competitive in price and equipment lead time. In turn, the provider is now able to offer optimal and safe working conditions for its employees while also guaranteeing throughput and service for its growing base of customers.
